Weekend Update Sept 24-25, 2011
The ’96 Chiefs had a 4 point weekend and currently sit in 2nd place in West Division(3rd overall) with 6 points after the first 4 games of the season.

They opened the weekend with a tough game vs Waterloo Wolves Saturday night. Despite being outshot 30-13 in the Waterloo barn, the Chiefs held on. Matt Dacosta #22 scored the always important first goal of the game with assists from Malchesky #66 and Hiddink #8. The Wolves’ fate was sealed by Brook Hiddink #8 with the Game Winning Goal on an assist from Yurek #15 on the PowerPlay. Despite throwing everything they had at the net over the next two periods including a 6-on-4 in the last minute, goaltender Dan Black #1 stood firm to walk away from RIM Park with the win, a GAA=1.00 and a SV%=0.967.

The following day, the Chiefs hosted the “always physical” Chatham Cyclones. Goaltender Coleman McDonald #35 got the nod for his first AAA start and didn’t disappoint. The Chiefs hurled a barrage of pucks at the Chatham net out-shooting the Cyclones 41-17. The game was full of big hits, lots of passes, and many posts, crossbars and near misses. Despite the physical nature of the game, the Chiefs showed restraint with only 4 penalties. Andrew Yurek #15 opened the scoring on a PowerPlay with an unassisted end-to-end rush, a toe-drag around the opposing defenceman, and then a nifty shot thru the 5-hole for the GWG. On a feed by Will Goodhue #16, Sam Vokes #44 unleashed a cannon of a shot from the top of the circle which blew right by(or right through?) the Cyclone goalie. Three minutes later, Vokes #44 fired another howitzer just wide of the net. While the Cyclones were ducking for cover, Keaton McIntyre #13 tapped the rebound off the end boards into the open side for the third goal. The final goal of the game came on a slick breakout pass from defenceman Andrew Martin #18 to Austin Malchesky #66 who wristed a shot high blocker side from the blueline that the Cyclone goalie still hasn’t seen. The EMC defence corps allowed a season low 17shots on goal. The Chiefs win 4-0 and McDonald #35 earns a shutout in his first career AAA game.
