The Minor Atom Chief’s made history this weekend by being
the first Elgin-Middlesex team to win the Minor Atom International Silver Stick
Championship!!
It was a long and hard battle to win the title. It began with the Peterborough Petes on Thursday night in a game that ended in a 3-3 tie.The next game wasn’t until 5:30 on Friday evening and they found they had an entire day to kill, so what else do you do with 17 nine-year old hockey players? Take the Go-Train to the Hockey Hall of Fame of course!
Inspired by what they saw, these boys beat the Ottawa Sting with a 5-2 win that night. Two more wins on Saturday against the East Coast Wizards (8-0) and the South Shore Kings (8-3) meant that they moved on to the quarter finals!
Sunday was a grueling day of hockey for these little guys. It started with an overtime win against the Markham Waxers (3-2). Less than 3 hours later, they faced their arch-rivals, the London Jr. Knights. Down 0-2 with 8 minutes left in the third, the team rallied and came back to win 3-2. With only an hour and a half of rest, the boys quickly refueled and refocused to face the Toronto Red Wings. They were lights out, and took the Championship with a score of 3-0.
Winning this title was a complete TEAM effort and your coaches and parents couldn’t be more proud. Way to go Chiefs!
