CONGRATULATIONS JUMBO!!
The Elgin Middlesex Canucks would like to congratulate Elgin Middlesex alumni, Joe Thornton, on the retirement of his jersey in San Jose and his outstanding NHL career.

Joe played for the U15 Elgin Middlesex Canucks (then Chiefs) during the 1993-1994 season, racking up an impressive 83 goals and 85 assists for 168 points in 67 games before moving on to Jr.B in St. Thomas and then to the OHL with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, and eventually the NHL.

Joe Thornton, often referred to as "Jumbo Joe," had a remarkable hockey career spanning over two decades. Drafted first overall by the Boston Bruins in 1997, Thornton quickly made a name for himself with his exceptional playmaking skills. After being traded to the San Jose Sharks in 2005, he became the face of the franchise, leading them to multiple playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2016. Thornton holds numerous records with the Sharks, including most assists (804) and second in points (1055). Known for his leadership and unselfish play, Thornton was honored with his jersey number 19 being retired by the Sharks in 2024. He also won the Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophy in 2006, cementing his legacy as one of the NHL's all-time greats.
