The ’96 Chiefs travelled down Hwy 401 to take on the struggling Chatham Cyclones. The Cyclones have 3 high end players out due to fighting majors and their coaching staff quit the day before. Despite these odds, the Cyclones came out fast and furious in the first 10 minutes.
Most of the play was in the EMC zone to start. Goaltender Coleman McDonald #35 had to turn away several hard shots in those first minutes to keep the Cyclones from building momentum. Sam Vokes #44 scored with 3 minutes left in the 1st period on the power play following a pass from defender Frasier Lewis #4. Austin Malchesky #66 scored an even-strength goal a minute later assisted by Will Goodhue #16 and Keaton McIntyre #13 to end the period up by a score of 2-0
The second period was back and forth until Vokes #44 scored in the last minute to increase the lead to 3-0 on a pass from Keaton McIntyre #13.
The Chiefs opened things up in the 3rd period as the Cyclone’s short bench started to fade. Vokes #44 completed his hat trick five minutes into the frame assisted by Hiddink #8 and Johnston #9. Andrew Martin #18 scored a minute later assisted by Nick Phillips #10 and Hiddink #8. Speedy winger Matt DaCosta #22 scored with three minutes left in the game assisted by Goodhue #16 and defenceman Andrew Yurek #15 on the power play. One minute later, Vokes #44 netted his fourth goal of the game assisted by Johnston #9 and Lewis #4. Goaltender McDonald #35 turned aside all 23 shots to earn his fourth(league leading) shutout. The Chiefs earned a decisive 7-0 win over the depleted Chatham Cyclones with 5 EV goals and 2 PP goals. There was balanced scoring with 11 players picking up a total of 19 points on the afternoon.
