Chief Day Oct 29 vs Cambridge Hawks
The ’96 Chiefs took on the league leading Cambridge Hawks on Chief Day 2011. The Hawks are ranked #25 Provincially and are off to a quick start in league play. They have a deadly power play that moves the puck quickly towards the opposition net. Opening with an energetic National Anthem, the Chiefs were flying from the first puckdrop.

Sam Vokes #44 scored in the first minute catching the Hawks flat-footed. He was assisted by a beautiful saucer pass to the slot by Dylan Johnston #9. The Hawks brushed this one off only to be burned again by the same play, same goal scorer, catching a pass in the same area. This time the play was setup by Captain Brook Hiddink #8. The Chiefs were leading 2-0 after the first period. Back in our own end, goaltender Dan Black #1 was not seeing much action, turning away just 3 shots in the period. This was about to change.

The second period started well enough with the Chiefs on the power play. Captain Hiddink #8 scored two minutes into the period on a feed from defenceman Cam Garrow #91. The Cambridge coach immediately called a "Time Out” to settle his struggling team. Not sure what was said at the bench, but the Hawks came out flying. The rest of the period was all Cambridge as the Chiefs took 4 minor penalties and the speedy Hawk wingers were able to convert 3 power play goals to tie the game. The teams retired to the dressingroom. Goaltender Dan Black faced 20 shots in the 2nd period alone, most on the penalty kill.

The third period was a defining moment for the Chiefs as they played disciplined, hard-hitting, fast-paced hockey with the one of the best teams in the league. Eight minutes into the frame, Captain Hiddink #8 scored the game winning goal on a pass from Keaton McIntyre #13. The Chiefs shut down the Hawks for the rest of the game and killed two more penalties including a double-minor in the last 3 minutes. Despite pulling their goaltender in the last minute and going 6 on 4, the Chiefs defence weathered the Cambridge onslaught to win the game 4-3. The Chiefs have now defeated two of the top teams in the league. Goaltender Dan Black #1 made 28 saves for the win, most of the shots coming on the penalty kill.
