    Game 1 vs Whitby Wolves

It wasn't the best way to start the tournament for the 99 Chiefs as they lose their opener 3-1 to a fast skating squad from Whitby.  The good news is that this is our cross-over game, so there is still hope to win the division.  Obviously, we now need to win our next three, but that's certainly something we can handle.

I was unfortunately late to the arena and missed the 1st period (Dang work commitments and driving in London is not fun!) This also meant I missed 3 of the 4 goals scored in the game.  I can't comment on the pace of play in the first, but have the following details from my trusty assistant:

    - We scored first.  Goal scorer unknown at this point.  It was probably my son :)
    - Whitby scored on 2 PP's to take a 2-1 lead.

As I arrived, minutes into the second, a couple things were obvious:

    1. Whitby has some fast skaters
    2. Whitby has some large players
    3. We can skate with them
    4. The referees were calling a tight game
    5. it was foggy along the glass (high 20's outside temperature)
I saw no goals in the second.  Neither team had many chances but the Chiefs goalie (C. Sonier) had to make a potential game-saving breakaway save midway through the period to keep it at 2-1 Wildcats.  The EMC squad could not make this the turning point as the Wildcats scored on another powerplay late in the period to go ahead 3-1.

The third period was dominated by the Chiefs, but the boys could not find a way to beat the Whitby keeper.  Each team had more powerplays, yet neither team could score.  On the bright side, the Chiefs showed that they have grit, stamina and determination and although they are now 0-1 in the tournament I am confident they will rebound this evening with a victory.

    Game 2 vs Brampton Battalian

Now that the cross-over game is complete, and due to the fact that the Chiefs lost that game, Wins are required from here on out.  The Chiefs cqame out stong against the Brampton squad and following a nice rush by R. Root, K. Chisholm knocked in his pass from the side of the net to stake the visitors to an early 1-0 lead.  That lead did not last long as the Battalian scored a PP goal as the CHiefs fouynd themselves down 2 men.  The goal cam just as the first penalty expired.  Th eperiod ended 1-1 and was fairly even.

The second period was a different story as the Chiefs continued to press and were able to score a couple quick ones against a startled Battalian keeper.  This period seemed to be spent in the Brampton end for the most part, but the Battalian had their chances but could not beat C. Pearen in the Chiefs goal. (my apologies to the goal scorers in this period, I can't recall who scored)

Period 3 was much the same as period #2 but until the Chiefs could score 1 or 2 more, the game was far from out of reach.   That goal game with about 6 minutes remaining as C. Abbott pulled the old wrap-around and snuck one past the Brampton goalie.  This was a relatively safe lead and the CHiefs played good solid defensive hockey for the remainder of the period.

All-in-all this was a nice way to get back in the win column.  Tomorrow, however is a new day.

Congratulations boys!  2010 Hamilton Jr. Bulldog Tournament Classic
    CHAMPIONS!

    champs.jpg

Wow!  What a weekend.  We leave town on Friday to sun and (relatively) warm temperatures.  Arrive home Sunday evening to 30cm of snow.  Was it all a dream?

Obviously, congratulations are in order to the 17 young members of the 99 Chiefs and the coaching staff for a very successful weekend in the Steel City.  From puck drop Friday morning, to tournament-winning goal at approximately 5:00 Sunday evening the kids showed that they were here to win.

I will try, in this one to not mention any names as it truly was a team effort but there are a couple of guys I will have to mention a little later in the story. (Chapter 34, page 350).  At the risk of offending anyone, I will say that this team has no superstars.  This team has no boys who think they are superstars.  I think the reason for this is that there are no parents who believe that their child is a superstar.  (It there are some, they hide it well).  Each game someone else steps up and does something special to help his team win.  Whether it be a key goal, a key save, a key block, or something not so obvious like picking up a teammate when he has made a mistake.  From what I've seen, these boys all get along and have grown - some over 3 years, some just 3 months - to be good buddies.  They care for each other and for this reason, I think I speak for all of us when I say "Way to go, guys!  You deserve it"

Who knows if we win another tournament, but now that they know they can, I see great things in the future for the '99 Chiefs.

Everyone knows the top-end teams are not participating in this tournament, and that's OK.  We showed signs in the Shanahan that we can compete with the "big boys".  Even prior to that, we lead the Toronto Marlies by a goal late in the second period in Detroit.  These kids are right there, knocking on the door and I hope they realize now that they have an extra gear and l they can compete with anyone! (as long as we don't have to play them in Glencoe).

First of all, a few Kudos:
    - To the coaches.  Unfortunately Ryan was unable to make it, but great job to the 3 who were able to come and this shows that you are on the right track
    - To RR for remembering the jerseys
    - To BF for behaving himself Friday night
    - To M. Philip for almost single-handedly getting us to the final with a spectacular 4-goal performance Sunday morning.
    - To D. Panziera for scoring the winner (wait until you see the video of where he shot from - just proves the old adage, shoot from anywhere!)
    - C. Pearen for being named MVP of the final

(Does this read like a Grammy speech?)

    - To the Lord, for without him none of us would be here

(Now it sounds like a Grammy speech)

    Onto the Games

Game 1 saw us take on a U.S team called West Seneca.  We had not seen them before and found them to be a very good opponent.  i was not at this game, but have been told it was a close one and we were a bit fortunate to get the tie.  (3-3)

Late that evening, we played North York and had little trouble winning this one 11-3.  It was close for a while, but we pulled away in the late second and completely controlled the third period.  So far, so good.

Saturday morning we had to play Kingston.  This was another nail biter, but we held on for a 2-1 victory and also the knowledge that we would now be playing Sunday in a semi-final game.

Just making it to the semi was not enough.  We wanted the first seed and had an opportunity to clinch 1st place in the round-robin with a win over another US team from Rochester NY.  Also, for our enjoyment, we got to play at a lovely new 2-pad arena in the Heart of Downtown Hamilton rundown, old 2-pad arena in the seedy part of town.  Rochester probably felt right at home.  (just kidding!  I have not been to Rochester, I know nothing of the place.  Just felt like adding a little spice)  This was another tight game until late in the third when we scored 3 quick ones to secure first place with a 5-2 victory.

A familiar foe was on tap for the semi-final Sunday morning.  Cambridge, one team who most of us feel is one of the most improved teams from last season was standing in our way.  As mentioned previously, M. Philip woke up Sunday morning and said "Boys, I guarantee we will be in the final". Now, I seriously doubt that's what he said, but that's what his father told me, so it must be true.  The game ended 5-0 with Philip scoring the first 3, and adding a 4th for good measure in a 5-0 win.

Now we were headed into uncharted territory as I do not believe this 99 Chief team has made a Final so it was very exciting.  Some of these kids come from winning organizations (Dorchester, Ilderton, Belmont for example)  Others come from "also-rans", if you will (Port Stanley, for example). That's not a knock on Port, it's just the way it is.  Some of these kids have been on winners in the past, others haven't been so lucky.  So, how is this group going to react?

It didn't look good early as the Flyers (Don Mills) scored one in the first, another in the second to take a 2-0 lead.  No big deal, the Chiefs responded with the next 3 to take a 3-2 lead late in the third.  Unfortunately, a couple penalties against the Chiefs gave DMF a 2-man advantage and they scored almost instantly.  Now, 3-3 and the Chiefs still had 1:50 to kill. Pretty easy at this point to have a letdown and let it slip away, but the team takes after their coaches - cool, calm and collected.  The penalty was killed and off to OT we go.

This was very stressful and I hope we don't have to go through this any more.  Fortunately, late in the second overtime (3-on-3) Panziera scored the aforementioned winner from  a nearly impossible angle.  Mayhem ensued!

Now, it was just a matter of safely returning home as, outside of Hamilton, the weather was a bit treacherous.

This is where I was hoping to add the vid of the winning goal.  I am, however,  experiencing some technical difficulties in uploading it.  I'll try to iron these out.  If not, I can send it to you, it's not very big as I kind of messed up (I'm no Karl).  I have the goal, it's just that I didn't get much of the celebration.  By "not much" I mean about 1 second lol.  Oh well, I still have my day job.

p.s. I uploaded a few of the pictures I took at the game. Check out the Photo Galleries section from the main menu. If anyone wants all of them, I can burn a CD for you.  I took about 250 pictures (many of them are junk, of course, or pictures of you-know-who). If you do get them, I highly recommend looking sequentially at the team photos and just watch one kid. (Panziera is a good one) At 3.5 fps you get some funny faces :) Just let me know.

    Game 1 - Markham

It's always a good idea to start off a tournament on the right foot.  That's what we did, although it got a wee bit tense early in the third.

Final score was 4-2 for the good guys.  Period one was dominated - at least in time-of-possession - by the Chiefs.  We had a few excellent opportunities but were not able to score on the Markham goalie.  Defensively, we held them to no more than 1, or 2 shots as the team was playing very well in our own end and on the back check.  We scored early in the second and a short while after to make it 2-0.  S. Bulitka scored both of these goals.  One on a rebound of a point shot, the other on a nice feed from behind the net by D. Winchester.

In the third, a goal by K. Chisholm from in front of the net gave us a seemingly commanding lead.  However, we all saw the Canada/Russia game the other night :)  Low-and behold, the Majors took advantage of one of the few defensive breakdowns by the Chiefs and narrowed the gap to 3-1 with 9 minutes remaining.  Another goal by the Majors with 4 minutes left brought it to 3-2 and you could feel the pressure mounting.  Not wanting to take any chances, coach Facca called a timeout and got things back under control.  A short while after this, R. Root banged in a rebound and the 2 goal lead was restored. This is how it ended and I think we should all be pretty satisfied.

Tough one later tonight against Whitby.

    Game 2 - Whitby

The long time between games didn't affect the Chiefs in the least.  The boys played exceptionally well in this game and coasted to a 4-1 victory over the Whitby Wildcats.  The score was 0-0 after 1, but, as in the first game today, the Chiefs broke through with 2 goals in the second period.  Defensemen figured prominently in both of these goals.  B. Bowers scored on a wrist shot from the point on the powerplay as the puck seemed to deflect off a Whitby defender.  Not long after, C. Schyvenaars led a nice rush deep into the Whitby end, tried to tuck one in on the short side of the goaltender, was denied, but D. Winchester was there to clean up and poke it past the netminder.

In the third, the Chiefs continued to press and were rewarded after a scramble when captain K. Chisholm found a rebound and shot it into the yawning cage. (I'm really working the cliche's here!).  Later in the period, S. Bulitka scored a highlight-reel goal to increase the lead to 4-0.  Although the Wildcats scored later - with about 4 minutes remaining - it was pretty obvious that the Chiefs were not going to let this one slip away.

A solid game from start to finish by all players and we are now in the drivers seat to make it to Sunday action.

Early one tomorrow, though, as we play at 9:00.
    I'm out!

    Game 3 - Central Ontario

It turned out to be a bit of a heartbreaker for the Chiefs as the battled back from a sluggish start only to lose in the final second of the game.

It seems to me that we tend to start slowly on these morning games and today was no exception.  It's not terrible, as in we are not stuck in our end for the entire time, but we just don't seem to be clicking in the first period and a half of this one.  For the first time in the tournament we did not score first as COW took advantage of their first powerplay to take a 1-0 lead after one.

Partway through the second, before we "woke up" completely, the Wolves scored another after applying some pressure deep in our zone.  The boys finally got it going later in the period and a goal by D. Winchester before the end of the period narrowed the gap to one.

Early in the third, the boys tied it up on a goal by D. Panziera. The team seemed to have it turned around but we were unable to score again.  We did get in a bit of penalty trouble and had to kill a couple more penalties.  With only a few seconds remaining the Wolves had one last chance to win it as they came out on a 2-on-1 with just 10 seconds remaining.  They took full advantage of this chance and scored just before the final buzzer rang.

It was a sad way to lose.  On the bright side, we are still in control of our destiny as a win against West Senaca later this afternoon will put us through to the semis.

    Game 4 - West Seneca

When does a tie feel like a loss?  When you had to win to move on :(

After tying West Seneca 1-1 the Chiefs are left to wonder "what if?" The boys played a good game. Both goaltenders played very well, and the end result was tie game.  As West Seneca has a better GF Avg, as well as more goals, they will move on with 5 points and we will go home with 5 points.  The Chiefs were up 1-0 late in the third, but the Wings scored after a long scramble in front of the Chief net with just 4 minutes remaining.  Unfortunately, the referees were not our friends as a few penalties which were not called earlier in the game were suddenly called. The Chiefs were even 2 man down for a short period with just 2 minutes remaining.  The penalties were killed, but the Chiefs were unable to score another goal despite pulling their goalie.
